The Wally Hayward Marathon has been run 43 times to date. In 2016 MiWay Insurance became the title sponsor and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

This race is a tribute to one of South Africa’s greatest ever athletes. It has been a fixture on the road running calendar for the past 43 years, usually on the 1st of May, Workers Day.

The first run ever took place on 30 June 1977 over a distance of 42.2 km, starting and finishing at Hoërskool Verwoerdburg.

Additional distances of 21.1km, 10km and 5km were later added.   

Since 2005, the Wally has started and finished at Hoërskool Zwartkop, in Centurion. For the past few years, the kiddie’s 1 km race has been held to raise funds for SPCA, Tshwane
